Type 2 diabetes (also known as non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) or adult-onset diabetes) occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin (a hormone which helps your body's cells absorb sugar/glucose) or when your body starts to resist the effects of insulin.
