The Best ways to Lose Weight
Unfortunately there is no quick fix solution when it comes to losing weight. Even the cosmetic surgery route is not always an easy option. It can be painful and is almost always a relatively expensive option. The main surgical method used to remove body fat is liposuction. This is not a cheap option and can cost anywhere between £1500 and £5000, depending on where in the UK the treatment is carried out and on what part of the body. Cheaper surgery is available in countries such as Spain and Hungary, but of course there will be extra costs to factor in such as flights and accommodation. However, the good news is that the most effective and healthiest ways to shed the pounds are also the cheapest. Most doctors agree that the best way to lose weight is to increase exercise levels and decrease the amount of food taken into the body. If the amount of calories going into the body are less than the amount of calories being used or ‘burned’ by the body, then weight loss will occur.
Dieting to Lose Weight
When it comes to changing the diet in order to lose weight, the most effective ways are to eat less fat, sugar and processed foods. High fat foods contain more calories in a very small amount of that food than in the same weight of a lower fat food. For example there are 255 calories in a 50g bar of chocolate, but only 143 calories in a 150g banana. Many nutritionists now recommend that dieters eat 5 or 6 smaller meals throughout the day instead of 2 or 3 larger meals. This causes an increase in the metabolism and more effective fat burning. It also means that the dieter is less likely to become really hungry, which can lead to overeating.
A change in cooking habits is also vital. In order to lose weight and keep it off, it is a good idea to make changes that can be carried on for life. For example baking, poaching, grilling and steaming foods instead of frying them in oil. Also flavouring foods with vinegars, pepper and spices instead of butter or mayonnaise could be a simple way to cut back. Cooking food from scratch is probably one of the best ways to reduce fat and sugar intake, as it means the dieter can control exactly what is going into each meal. It is also cheaper than buying ready prepared meals.
Exercising to Lose Weight
While healthy eating is a very effective way to shed the pounds, weight loss can be increased by introducing some exercise. People that are not used to exercise should of course start off slowly and speak to their doctor if they are very overweight. It is not necessary to join a gym in order to take effective exercise. Walking is excellent exercise and is free. It is good for the heart and lungs and can reduce blood pressure if done regularly. Walking also boosts the metabolism and helps to reduce body fat. Walking can be carried out anywhere, on the streets or around a local park. It can also be incorporated into everyday life – for example getting off the bus a couple of stops early or parking the car a little further away from the shops than usual.
Many doctors also recommend swimming as an effective method of weight loss. Swimming is a very safe activity as it supports the body and joints and is less likely to lead to injury than other forms of exercise. Many council run swimming pools offer cheap sessions and adult only time slots.
In order to shed pounds, the vast majority of people will need to combine willpower with a few changes in lifestyle. However these changes are worth making and do not have to cost money. They can not only lead to the desired weight loss, but ultimately to better health and a longer life.
