Do you like to run? Running is perhaps one of the most popular exercises to get involved in. When I visit my local park for a stroll, I will always come across a number of people from all ages of life getting involved with either walking, jogging or running. Its great to see people taking an active role in their health. There are a number of benefits that come with exercising like this. I am going to address these benefits below.
1) Reduce Stress Levels
The first point I want to mention is that running just a couple of times a week will help to reduce stress levels. We all get stressed from the pressure of modern day living. Whether its work related, family or other relationships we nurture, we develop stress levels and we need to address them in the best way possible. Going for a light jog or run for about twenty to thirty minutes will help to shake off that anxiety you are experiencing. You’ll feel a lot better afterwards and certainly a lot more calm and centered.
2) Develop More Confidence
The next benefit I want to talk about is the idea that running develops confidence levels. As you challenge yourself to run different courses such as the park, hills, long distance running etc and you complete these courses, your confidence levels and self-esteem levels begin to rise. You’ll feel stronger and you’ll have a sense of wanting to take on the world. If your only starting out, I challenge you today to go for a light jog for about fifteen minutes from say one end of the park to the next. Notice how you feel after you complete your course. Feeling a bit better about yourself?
3) Center Yourself
This is perhaps one of my favorite benefits to running. I know this works for many other people as we talk about it and they immediately see the benefit too. Have you ever notice how centered you become after you have done an intense run? Apart from feeling more confident and reducing your stress levels your mind becomes less chaotic with your thoughts. You become present in the moment and you are not “thinking” about past incidences or future events. This state of presence, in my opinion is the best benefit I receive from running.
4) Low Cost Entry Level
The forth benefit of running is the fact that the entry level cost is very low. If you compare this to other sports activities where you need to purchase numerous equipment components, you’ll get what I mean. All you need to start running is some comfortable running shoes that support your feet and ankles, along with some training clothes such as a pair of supportive socks, shorts and perhaps a t-shirt. Just find a running track/course to run on and you’re sorted.
5) Lose Those Extra Pounds
Lastly.. and perhaps the most common benefit you hear people talk about is the idea that running helps you lose weight and stay in shape. Running is a great cardiovascular exercise and it helps with exercising your upper and lower parts of your body. With all these muscles working simultaneously, you will begin to lose weight. This happens as long as you jog or run on a regular basis and you challenge yourself by doing intense courses such as running up hills.
